FRC Team #4514
The 2016-2017 season is our 5th year as a FRC team. The team is open to any Calvert County high school student who is in good standing with their school. S.T.E.A.M. stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Math. The students developed a team logo that incorporates Hero’s steam turbine, a steam engine developed by Hero of Alexandria.
Our team’s mission is to inspire Calvert County high school students to pursue careers in engineering, science, and technology and provide them with the skills and confidence necessary to succeed.
Each year, FRC challenges students with a new competition which is announced at the beginning of January. Students get 6½ weeks from the day the challenge is announced to design, construct, program, and test the robot they will use in competitions.
Our team uses this challenge to provide a project based learning experience which helps students consolidate what they learn in school by applying it to solve a significant challenge. Students get the opportunity to work side by side with professional engineers and scientists on sophisticated technology. Our team:
* Introduce students to System Engineering and Design principles.
* Promotes team building and networking to prepare students for future academic and work environments
* Works with students to give them practical hands-on experience while building the robot
* Challenges students to realize their full potential
FRC, billed as “Sport for the Mind” is the highest level of competition sponsored by the FIRST organization. Participation in FRC gives Calvert County high school students the opportunity to apply for the $20 Million in scholarships associated with FRC this year.
The FIRST organization was founded in 1989 by inventor and entrepreneur Dean Kamen to, “transform our culture by creating a world where science and technology are celebrated and where young people dream of becoming science and technology leaders." FIRST goes beyond technology by encouraging “Gracious Professionalism” and the development of life and leadership skills.
